Islamic Teachings on Contentment and the Duty to Support Those in Need: The Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza

In the midst of ongoing global crises, it is essential to reflect on the Islamic principles of contentment and our duty towards those less fortunate. The situation in Gaza has become more dire than ever, as extreme shortages of food and water have plunged the Palestinian people into unimaginable suffering. In light of this, we must revisit the teachings of Islam, which call us to be grateful and content with what we have while extending our hands to those in need.

Islam teaches that true contentment lies not in accumulating wealth, but in being grateful and mindful of Allah’s blessings. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Look at those who are lower than you and do not look at those who are higher than you, lest you belittle the favours Allah conferred upon you.” (Sahih Muslim). This powerful reminder encourages us to compare ourselves with those who are less fortunate, fostering humility and gratitude in our hearts. By being aware of others’ hardships, we can nurture contentment within ourselves and be motivated to assist those in need.

An excellent example of contentment and generosity can be seen in the actions of Salafus-Salih. Among them was the noble companion Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), who was known for his immense generosity. It was reported that he would rarely eat without inviting an orphan or a poor person to share his meal. On one occasion, he was presented with a roasted lamb, but before taking a bite, he instructed it be sent to a family in need, despite his own hunger. This selfless act of charity reflected the deep contentment and concern the Salaf had for those less fortunate, prioritizing the needs of others over their own desires.

This teaching is particularly relevant in the face of the dire situation in Gaza. A recent report to the United Nations General Assembly revealed that “never in post-war history had a population been made to go hungry so quickly and completely as was the case for the 2.3 million Palestinians in Gaza”. According to the report by Fakhri, the Occupier has employed tactics that include the destruction of Gaza’s food system poisoning agricultural land, destroying ports, and sinking fishing vessels with the intent to make the Palestinian population entirely dependent on humanitarian aid. Tragically, since October, 34 Palestinians, most of them children, have died from starvation.

This appalling reality calls upon us to respond urgently. Allah, the Most High, reminds us in the Quran:
“The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed of grain that sprouts seven ears; in every ear, there are a hundred grains. Allah multiplies the reward for whomever He wills, for Allah is vast and knowing.” (Quran 2:261).
This verse emphasizes that any charitable act, no matter how small, can multiply into immense reward, especially when performed with sincerity and urgency. We are also reminded by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) that “Charity does not decrease wealth.” (Sahih Muslim), highlighting the spiritual and worldly benefits of giving in the way of Allah.

In response to the pressing need in Gaza, we are launching an urgent project to deliver essential food and clean water to the most affected. Alhamdulillah, with the support of our donors, and in collaboration with the IHH Humanitarian team, we have successfully provided up to 3,000 meals for displaced Palestinians through previous efforts. With IHH’s established presence in Gaza since 2009, we are working to expand our outreach to ensure aid reaches those in the most vulnerable situations.

Project Goals:

  1. Distribute Vital Food Supplies: We aim to provide non-perishable items that can sustain families during these difficult times.
  2. Provide Clean Water: Ensuring access to safe drinking water is critical to the survival of those affected by this crisis.

Let us reflect on the teachings of our faith and act with urgency, sincerity, and dedication. As we strive for contentment by helping those less fortunate, we also work towards earning the immense reward that Allah promises for those who spend in His cause. The contributions of our donors have become a beacon of hope for the people of Gaza, and we ask that you continue to support this noble effort.
