Brief understanding of Aqiqah

  • What is Aqiqah?

Aqiqah refers to the devotional acts done to welcome newborns, it is the Islamic practice of shaving the head of the newborn on the seventh day after birth as well as the sacrificing of lambs for the newborn.

  • What is the hukum of performing Aqiqah?

Sunnah Muakkadah (highly recommended)

  • When to perform Aqiqah?

Best to be performed on the seventh day after birth, if not the fourteenth day, twenty-first day, or any period of time before the born child reaches puberty.

  • Why do we perform Aqiqah?

1)A sign of appreciation to Allah S.W.T for the blessing of a child.

2)To share happiness with close family, friends & the rest of the Muslims.

3)To normalize and get used to the practice of the sunnah of Rasulullah S.A.W

  • What is the amount of goats/lambs to be sacrificed for the newborn?

Child(baby boy): 2 lambs

Daughter(baby girl): 1 lamb

  • What are the methods of Distributing Sacrificial Meat?

1/3: consumed by family members

1/3: charity/sadaqah

1/3: present to neighbours, close friends & the rest of the Muslims
